WHAT IS STERLING SILVER? TOP

Sterling silver is a combination of pure silver and a little bit of copper alloy. Silver in its original form looks bright white and it is extremely soft. Actually, 100% silver is almost too soft to work with. To enhance its beauty and durability, jewelers use sterling silver, which is composed of 92.5% silver and 7.5% copper alloy. Sterling silver is hipo allergic and can be worn by most people.

WHAT IS CUBIC ZIRCONIA? TOP

Cubic Zirconia, also known as C.Z., is a relatively rare mineral that has the appearance of diamonds. They are indistinguishable from diamonds to an untrained eye. Jewelry made from C.Z. is being produce regularly because of its low cost, durability, and beauty. It is found in most sterling silver jewelry and can come in many different cuts and colors.

Its color is produced by the addition of certain metal oxides. The addition of cerium produces the red, orange, and yellow colors. Adding chromium makes it green, and adding neodymium makes it purple. C.Z. is pink when erbium is added and golden brown when titanium oxide is added.

WHAT ARE BIRTHSTONES? TOP

The believe that there is a stone with undifined powers for every month goes back at least to the first century AD. Over time, gems with special colors became associated with the twelve signs of the zodiac, which correspond roughly with the months of the year. Each sign has its own name and its own characteristics. Those born under a particular sign are thought by some people to be influenced by that sign and to share common traits. Ancient people believed that to give birthstones as a gift would bring good luck and protect the person from harm.

There is some debate about which gemstones were assigned to each month by the ancient people. Because of this, different cultures around the world have developed different birth stone lists. Some people believe that the proper way to assign gemstones is according to astrological sign and not month.

The most common chart of monthly birthstones can be found below.

February          Amethyst

March              Aquamarine

April                 Diamond

May                 Emerald

June                 Moonstone or Alexandrite

October           Opal or Tourmaline

November        Citrine

December        Turquoise or Blue Topaz

WHAT IS A GEMSTONE? TOP

A gemstone, gem or also called semi-precious stone is an attractive and valuable piece of mineral, which — when cut and polished — is used in jewelry or other adornments. Although certain rocks, (such as lapis-lazuli) and organic materials (such as amber or jet) are not classified as minerals by gemologists, they are still largely applied in jewelry. Therefore they are often considered to be gemstones as well. Some minerals that are too soft to be generally applied in jewelry may still be considered gemstones because of their remarkable color, lustre or other physical properties that have aesthetic value.

The market value of a gemstone is mostly based on its great beauty, rarity, cut, popularity or aesthetics. The color also plays a very important role in determining the value of a gemstone.

HOW DO I TAKE CARE OF STERLING SILVER JEWELRY? TOP

Sterling Silver jewelry can tarnish with care and tear. The constant contact with oxygen and sulfur in the air can tarnish your silver jewelry. A tarnished appearance occurs when sulfur becomes bound to the surface of silver.

The best way to avoid or minimize tarnishing and staining is to keep your silver jewelry in a jewelry box or sealed bag when it is not in use. The contact with water can also cause your sterling silver jewelry to tarnish, so if it gets wet you should let it air dry completely before putting it in a jewelry box or sealed bag.

You should clean your silver jewlry with a soft cloth or a jewelry cleaning cloth. We highly recommed the use to jewelry cleaning cloth because it has two sheets of cotton: the outer layer is cotton for buffing, and the inside layer contains special chemicals that will whiten silver jewelry and make it look like new. Each cloth lasts for dozens of uses. Hand polishing silver is a great way to keep silver shiny, and will not damage its patina. You can find jewelry cleaning cloths in the jewelry section of many department stores.

Avoid using toothbrushes or any object with bristles to clean your silver jewelry or you may have permanent scracts on your jewelry. Silver is a very soft metal and it cannot be repared once its surface is damaged. Also, using soap that contains phosphate can turn your sterling silver jewelry brown.
